The completion of service hours is a required component for all levels of theology. The specific focus of service for each level is designed to complement the student's Theology class. Failure to complete the required hours could result in a failing grade for service hours
Freshmen
During freshman year, students take Catholic Identity. This course explores the primary teachings of the Catholic faith. Since the Church has long been involved in reaching out to those in need, students are required to complete five hours of service.
Sophomores
During sophomore year students study the Hebrew and Christian Scriptures. Students are challenged to follow the example of the prophets, Jesus, and his disciples who answered the call to reach out to others. Students must complete ten hours of service at their church and/or school community. All hours must be completed outside of the regular school day and be verified by an adult witness.
Juniors
Community Service is a required component that complements the junior level course in Christian Morality and Ministry. Students are encouraged to practice a morality informed by service at an agency that provides works of mercy. A primary focus is to experience service work as a form of Christian ministry and a necessary response to the Gospel call. Students perform fifteen hours of service on their own time, either during the summer or the school year and are responsible for turning in a timesheet verifying completed service hours.
Seniors
Senior service is a required component of Issues in Peace and Justice. Students choose a local agency or center that brings justice in the community by creating fair structures and systems and/or changing unfair structures and systems. By working with the agency, students develop ways to respond to discrimination, injustice, and social evil through positive, nonviolent, creative actions that will have long-term systematic effects. Students must obtain twenty hours of service at the agency on their own time. They may complete these hours during the summer before their senior year or during the first semester of their senior year. Ten of the twenty hours must be completed by the end of the first quarter.
