Kenya Mission Trip Reflection “Over the course of two weeks in Kenya, I learned enough lessons to last a lifetime. One of the things that stood out the most was the kindness that was shown us. To the average American, these people would appear to have absolutely nothing, but that is not the case. They have God, each other, and joy. People try to group happiness and joy in the same category, but they are two completely different things. Happiness is an emotion that people often feel whenever things are going their way and working in their favor – but it can easily be taken away. Joy is God-given, and the best part about it is that it cannot be taken away. The problem with many of us is that we operate with happiness and allow people and things to control our emotions. “This trip taught me to appreciate the little things in life. The people of Kenya are friendly and genuine in everything they do. The funny thing about the trip is that we were there to help them, but they helped us more than anything. When I came back home I felt somewhat disgusted with our lifestyle and the many things we take for granted. I try my absolute best not to waste any food, and I am so much more appreciative of running water, electricity, family, and life. I am truly blessed, and sometimes it takes an experience like this to put things into perspective. “I understand that a mission trip to Kenya is not for everyone because of the different reactions from people when I told them how things were and adjustments I had to make. Everyone was fascinated with all the pictures, but I could tell when some people were like, “Ugh, I would never go two weeks without taking a shower” or “That doesn’t seem like fun at all” that this is definitely a selfless (not selfish) experience, which means giving up things in order help someone else. I didn’t mind at all though, because I gained so much. This was my first time experiencing a mission trip to Africa, but believe me, it is definitely not my last.” |
